287/365 Don't Drink the Koolaid

What in the heck is happening to education? Mrs. J is everything I would want for my own child's teacher. Organized, methodical, engaging, caring, professional - the best teacher I know. This is a teacher who is dedicated, thoughtful and learned, reduced to tears over feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. The FCAT scores, the data, the reviews by literacy coaches, the assessments - too much information, too little connection with the kids. This National Board Certified Mentor, Teacher of the Year, doubting her practices. The system is in meltdown.

It can be VERY disheartening ... the system sucks ALL creativity out of teaching.

It may be a cliche, but this is why the fewer and fewer good people want to become teachers. The system beats the crap out of them. What a mess. I'm glad you're there for Mrs. J. She needs someone who can truly empathize and understand what she's dealing with.

The "accountability" people are out to dismantle public education. Pure and simple. In the future, who's going to bother learning how to be a teacher when all anyone really wants is a tester?

Love the picture. Your words are too kind. It matters that you're listening and you get it. Thanks.
